At Home Teeth Whitening Never Looked So Good!
As many of you know, I grew up with a single mom. To this day I credit my mom for my love of all things beauty and fashion. It was in those moments as a little girl, staring up at her as she got ready for work that I became mesmerized by what a little mascara and a whole lot of confidence could do.
My mom was and still is my fashion inspiration, icon, my everything.
But beyond being the risk-taking diva she is, my mom also taught me a thing or two about beauty and skincare. Over the years I’ve collected some of my faves and today I’m bestowing these gifts upon you. You’re welcome in advance.
So sit back, relax and for heavens sake, CALL YOUR MOTHER!
1. Highlight one or your best feature.
For me, this is my eyes (shoutout to my mom for these bluish green eyes of mine). When I was first learning how to do makeup I remember my mom telling me to focus on one thing. In other words, don’t go with a smoky eye and plum lip to match. Allow one feature to be the focal point and work it girl!
2. Smile after applying each part of your make-up.
As silly as this sounds, smiling can make a big difference when it comes to the appearance of your makeup! And if you’re anything like my mom who has a smile on her face at every moment of the day, then trust me, you need this tip.
3. Keep those pearly whites WHITE (see a theme forming here? – we’re smilers in my family)
Not only does she have a great smile that every single person who’s ever met her comments on but she has perfectly straight, white teeth (again, shoutout to my mom for my straight teeth which to this day haven’t needed braces. Woop Woop).
In my late teens I played around with Crest Whitestrips from time to time but struggled talking while wearing them (you know what I’m referring to) and they always felt a bit goopy.
Recently I’ve discovered Smile Brilliant which makes whitening not only a personal experience but a simple one! I received my at home whitening kit which included the paste to create my own teeth molds. From there I sent my molds back in and within a few days received trays perfectly fitted to my own teeth. So this is what having a retainer feels like!
While the whitening process is a bit longer than other whitestrips (anywhere from 45 minutes – 3 hours depending on your sensitivity threshold), it only took a day for me to notice a difference. Not only that, but they are perfect for someone who has trouble sitting still like myself!
I can go about my before bed preparations and still have the ability to talk and breathe easy knowing I’m whitening my teeth and not drooling whitening goop out of my mouth at the same time. Because let’s be real, that’s not a good look.
But what IS a good look are my results. These pics below are after just one week of use. Yes, ONE week of using Smile Brilliant for 45 mins to an hour every night.
4. Happy girls are the prettiest girls.
While this isn’t a beauty tip per say, it’s an important one nevertheless. My mom is WORLD-renowned (okay maybe just California wide but you get the point), for her gorgeous smile! Yes the whitening and the overall caring for her teeth has made a huge difference but at the end of the day she exudes happiness and confidence by beaming those pearly whites for all to see.
5. Experiment on the weekends! (It’s not what is sounds like, I swear)
We all know the weekends are a time for letting loose and it shouldn’t be any different with your makeup (or fashion). Have some fun away from the often mundane Monday-Friday appearance and let your personality shine.
6. It’s all about the lighting.
Which is ironic because when it comes to selfies, this couldn’t be more true. In this case my mom was talking about bathroom lighting.
When I was younger, I really wanted an orange bathroom. So one weekend my mom and I painted my bathroom the happiest shade of orange. I loved that bathroom. I did not however love the way it affected the lighting in the room. Needless to say I moved elsewhere to do my makeup…Yikes.
7. Use a Q-Tip to smudge eyeliner or eyeshadow.
My mom was rocking the eyeshadow under the water line looong before I ever had the courage to do so. Literally, I just started doing this like a month ago. She used to always show me the multifaceted purpose of a Q-Tip as she took it and lightly smudged the eyeliner on her top lid and under her eyes for a more natural, smoked out look. Okayyy, I see you mama.
8. Moisturize (and wash) your face day and night.
From day one my mom made washing off my makeup at the end of the night an absolute must. The scent of her post face-washing moisturizer is one that is permanently ingrained in my nostrils and for that I’m forever grateful. I never go to bed with a face full of makeup and thoroughly washing and moisturizing my face after a long day of makeup wearing is a necessity.
These are just a few of many tips and tricks I’ve received from my mom over my twenty-four years of life – if I listed them all this post would go on forever! Hopefully you enjoyed them and they made you reminisce on your own mom inspired and approved beauty hacks.
